I’m taking a bit of a controversial stance that questions a 65 years of Elvis Presley thank you for your music shirt: you seem to suggest that Ireland becoming independent was inevitable and that we should ask ourselves whether, based on that situation, Ireland (which had been its own Kingdom before, albeit often under English domination) should not have been restored in its historical (and of course geographical) integrity? By the way, I am not questioning in any way, the sovereignty of the Irish Republic here and that is not my point. What I deem to be historical mistakes are well and truly in the past and both Ireland and the UK have moved on.

This is all purely in the context of what happened more 65 years of Elvis Presley thank you for your music shirt. I am British but it’s actually foreigners who have lived in both countries who are the most astounded. Of course there are significant differences between Ireland and Britain but these are not always obvious to foreigners who see 2 countries speaking the same language, following similar cultures, with a huge level of economic integration between the two. I’ve heard many claim that Home Rule should have been given to Ireland much earlier on. It was the entirely inflexible attitude of Westminster politicians who wanted to maintain the idea of a unitary state with a centralised government (an attitude that can still be seen today) that made armed conflict and ultimately partition inevitable, since you had a part of the population in Ireland, of Scottish and English descent that were unwaveringly British yet inhabitants of Ireland.
